Leinster Indoor Juvenile Championship, Athlone, 11-Feb-2017 / 12-Feb-2017

The Juvenile Striders were on top form in Athlone, putting in some great performances, many PB’s and a handful of medals, for good measure. The U14 boys nearly brought the roof off the stadium, with all three, Aidan Shannon, Darragh Flannelly and Owen Lennon, qualifying for the final. In a thriller of a race Aidan set a blistering pace early on, with Owen and Darragh motoring along in behind. Making it a Wexford one-two, Aidan crossed the line ahead of Conor Doyle, in a very exciting finish. Darragh and Owen were just outside the medals and ran PB’s in a super race for the Striders and Wexford. Building on her excellent performances last summer, Eve Byrne continues to improve and won a brilliant Silver in the 1Km walking event. The Striders won Bronze medals in back to back races through Adam O’Connor and Aaron Browne. Adam was very impressive in his heat and stormed home to a third place finish in the final. Aaron ran a great tactical race to put himself in a breakaway group of three and at the finish line, the medals were decided by a matter of inches.

Well done to all our other competitors. Elaina Browne, Aisling Power, Ellie Quinn, Myles Hewlett and Cian Flanagan all made it through to their respective finals and put in great efforts to all finish in Leinster top ten spots. Erinn Shannon, Louise Doyle, Sean Lennon, Finn Kelly and Eoin Shannon all recorded PB’s against very good opposition. In the sprints both Eve Byrne and Joshua Hewlett recorded PB’s and both finished one spot away from final qualification. Last, but not least was our sole field performer, Ciara Murphy, who threw another PB, to record another provincial top ten finish. Well done to all and thanks to Dick for getting us there and back safely.
