The Striders Juveniles made their first trip to Greystones on Saturday, to compete at the Leinster 4 X 100m relay championship. On the back of recent county success, hopes were high that BU13 and BU15 Striders teams would perform well at this high level. First in action were our under 13’s, who needed a good performance to come through their heat. The team of Oisin MacEochaigh, Aidan Shannon, Owen Lennon and Darragh Flannelly then exceeded all expectations, in the final when they crossed the line in a really tight finish, involving four teams, behind the clear winners. Unfortunately, after a long wait for results, the Striders came away without a medal, but with heads held high. Considering that this team are the current Leinster Cross Country Relay champions, this was quite a performance against the bigger sprint clubs.
Thanks to a slick performance by Adam O’Connor, Patrick Doyle, Conor Murphy, Aaron Browne and Ryan Kielthy, the under 15’s ensured that the Striders came away with some silverware, following a third place finish in their final. Swift baton changes were the order of the day as this team also displayed versatility to add this sprint relay medal to their provincial cross country relay silver medal, that they won earlier this year.
The day ended on another high with Elaina Browne recording a fast time to finish fifth place in the 800m Junior event. With Elaina eligible to compete again next year at Junior level, this was an excellent performance against older opposition. Well done to all athletes and parents who made the long journey.
