The Striders mens squad put up an heroic effort in the senior cross country championship, at Ferns, last weekend. Attempting to win the title for the first time since 1985, the thirteen man squad came mighty close and in the end finished a fantastic second place, in the team event. So much credit goes to the squad and coaches, who have worked so hard to take the club back to the forefront of Wexford cross country running. Following his recent victory in the novice event, Alan O’Connor was first Strider home, in fifth place. John McGrath and Brendan Lyng were in the lead group, from the start, and showed great resilience to finish in the top ten. With six to score in the team event, George Delaney, Sean Murphy and Paul Doran, gave it absolutely everything, finishing in the top twenty, to record an excellent team score.
The Striders had real strength in depth with the likes of Ted Flannelly, Pat O’Callaghan, John Kent, Colm Stafford, Emmett Malone, Mick O’Gorman and Paul Colfer all performing really well on the big day. Over a tough 10 km undulating course, the local club SBR were very deserving winners of the team event, with Ger Forde of Slaney Olympic taking the individual. Well done to all the Striders mens squad, all at the club are very proud of this great team performance.
